Life in the 1940’s was difficult for all parties involved. World War II had come to a close mid-way though this time period and individual groups were being shown freedoms that had not been given to them before. African Americans and women were being given jobs that were left when men had gone to war; also America was being shown the atrocities that were committed when humans were stripped of rights by Nazi Germany. This led to many reforms in American society, brought artists, who were escaping persecution, to America from overseas and changed the art scene. American art had come to the forefront of the world as this war had ended with America being a leading superpower. Abstract expressionism showed the country’s chaotic and raw society. Emotions were shown in art as they had not been before. Aestheticism had triumphed over practicality as giant glass buildings began to tear up the skyline. Art also began to appear in everyone’s home as television and movies began to more of a commonality. The 1940s can be considered a victory in American Art society.

In the 1940’s, World War II was on everyone’s mind. As the men were returning home from their stations in the army, the women were forced to give up their jobs. The women made room for the men to return to industry work. Continually, food was forced to be rationed to the economic situation the war caused. This made the home life stressful for the women who were supposed to maintain the house once again. Many men returned to college in order to get better jobs to help their families when they returned. The Government attempted to get protective education out to all civilians on the home front. As the women went to work on the home front, slacks became a new fashion. While the war was going on, there was a fabric restriction causing women to wear cheaper clothing than the overall “hot” new trends. Once that restriction was lifted however, the outfits began to resemble those of actresses; clothing such as sweaters. Hair was left short for easy maintenance when restricted with the war. Also in the 1940’s, men were introduced to casual shirts when doing recreational activities.
In the 1940s, life was hard for every American. We were waging a war between Germany and Japan and thousands of men were sent off to fight. While men were off fighting, it was up to women and minorites in society to keep up with work that men left behind. However, this was difficult because they had to keep up housework and maintain a job. The economy during the 1940s, increased due to the main focus of the world war.
Women were introduced to new hairstyles that were easy for the work force. During and after the war, women were introduced to pants, since it was required uniform for working in factories. After the war however, pants became casual wear for women instead just for athletic and work use.
There were many lifestyle changes during the 1940s. World War II was the biggest contributing factor to all of the changes that occurred during this decade. As men got up and left to go fight in the war, women were left behind to take care of homes, children, and now, business and jobs. For the first time ever, women were seeing the opportunity to join the work force instead of being stuck at home, cleaning and cooking. Women were introduced to a more modern lifestyle which was seen in their dressing and attitude in the work force. They no longer saw themselves as very different from men, because they were now showing the world that they were capable of doing everything a man could.
